Its Not Just One Man Busy In December!

29th January 2025

While most people took some well deserved time off over Christmas, our EME Power Systems engineers were hard at work replacing failing or ageing assets. With many businesses only shutting down during Christmas, it is often the only time that power can be switched off to allow essential electrical works to be carried out.

Between Friday, December 21st and Saturday, January 4th, EME Power replaced five transformers.

The first job was to replace a 1963-made transformer with a new energy-efficient transformer. This not only provides the customer with a more resilient and secure supply but will also save them thousands of pounds on their electricity bills. The existing HV cable was re-terminated and connected to the new transformer, and new LV cabling was installed.

The second job was to replace a Cast Resin and LV panel package substation. The project was started just before Christmas, with all supplies re-connected and energised by New Year's Eve. All HV and LV works were carried out in house which ensured seamless co-ordination and meant the works were completed on schedule.

The third transformer to be replaced was a 1968 unit which had a severe oil leak, and a subsequent following a Furans test had indicated that the mechanical strength of the insulation was in a critical condition. The customer had chosen to replace the transformer with a refurbished unit due to budget constraints and with the help of our specialist lift and shift contractor due to the transformer being located inside the factory, the ageing asset was replaced and the supply re-energised within a single day.

The penultimate project was to replace a transformer that had been subjected to damage by vandals. A quick turn-around was required to allow the site to be sold by its owners, and from receiving the enquiry on the 10th of December, the existing concrete plinth was adapted and a new 2.5MVA transformer was delivered to site, positioned, cabled and energised by the 4th January.

Last but not least, a 1974 transformer was replaced with a downsized new energy efficient unit due to the site having a reduced demand and wanting to reduce its electricity charges as much as possible. Due to the substation being quite tight for space, our specialist lift and shift contractor was put to use again, skating the old transformer out and the new one in. Due to the HV cable not being able to be replaced, the existing HV cable box was burnt out to allow the HV termination to be re-used, and new LV cabling was installed.

5 transformers changes, 5 extremely satisfied customers!
